It was an interesting time, our last quarter. Busy as ever, since the War on Drugs has started we have decided to shorten our Slum Tour. According to many of our guests, the tour is still very nice, with more interaction time with the people in Esteros. In february 2017, you can expect our New Slum Tour in Baseco.

Did you know that Smokey Tours is part of World Experience Philippines and that we have a Emigration Desk? We help expats with their SRRV (Retirement Visa). The last part of the year we have focussed on developing a tour for our Emigration Desk. Besides information how to emigrate to the Philippines, we have an almost finished Immersion tour for Expats!

Cisco and Rotary joint donation

On December 6, 2016, Cisco and Rotary partnered with us as we send our holiday gifts to the people of Barangay 150, the people living under the bridge.

Cross World and Spread the Love Seminar and gift giving

One of the guests who took the tour, Varias Paris, was deeply touched and had grown compassion to the people living under the bridge as they have to crawl in and out every day to be in their homes. V. Paris initiated a partnership with Cross World and Spread the Love to teach the people about first aid and farming as the residents will be relocated to Bulacan in May 2016. They have provided medical kits and farming seeds for each family. The have further extended their help through providing them relief goods such as rice, canned goods and etc. Moreover, as important as health is to these people, they also gave them blankets, towels, toothbrushes, nail cutters and other sanitizing paraphernalia

For Filipinos, it is extremely important and also sentimental to celebrate Christmas together as a family with whatever they can prepare. Through Christmas season, we would recognize the significance Filipinos give to their families. Beyond the gift giving we had organized in partnership with Cisco-Rotary and Varias Paris, we also extended our gifts to the people living under the bridge by giving them Christmas Eve celebration packages.

We are currently finishing the proposal for the Health Care Project in Aplaya BASECO. BASECO has 70,000 residents. Why Baseco? Because our New Slum Tour in 2017 will be in Baseco!

NGOs go around the huge slum of BASECO to help the residents. However, there are some areas which hardly receive some help from the NGOs just like Aplaya. Aplaya is the area close to the shore. In a span of 10 years, they had only experienced one medical mission.

Therefore, to be able to help the people, we are discussing with CREST(link is external) and the community leaders on how we can sustain and help the people in Aplaya so we can treat and help them with these health related issues. We are finalizing the plan and the partnerships with different organizations as well to be able to execute the project by late January or early February.

Marjorie Mangalonzo

Majorie Mangalonzo is our latest tour leader who started on October 1, 2016. She is a resident of Tondo right beside Barangay 105. With lots of working experience in different fields such as the food industry and some service industry, she was able to learn to lead the slum tour quickly. Through her additional Japanese Language skills, she was booked with the Japanese groups so they could converse easier.

Janet Bargo and new slum tour Baseco

Barangay 105 had been Experiencing a more intensive operation of the War on Drugs Campaign. Because of the risk of safety, we had been avoiding the area since November 8, 2016. Therefore, we are spending more time in finalizing the BASECO tour and our partnership with them. Janet Bargo, the tour leader resident of BASECO, will be leading and teaching the tour to other tour leaders.
